EMS Microcurrent Facial Lifting: A Complete Guide for Beauty Professionals

  • Mei, 05, 2026

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) microcurrent therapy is a non-invasive facial treatment that uses low-level electrical currents to tone facial muscles, improve skin elasticity, and create a visible lifting effect. Often called a “non-surgical facelift,” EMS is an excellent addition to any beauty salon’s service menu.

How EMS Works

EMS delivers low-frequency electrical impulses that mimic the body’s natural bioelectrical signals. This causes involuntary muscle contractions, effectively “exercising” the facial muscles. The microcurrent component (typically 100–1000 microamps) also enhances cellular activity:

  • Muscle toning: Repeated contractions strengthen relaxed/deconditioned muscles (e.g., cheek muscles) and relax over-contracted muscles (e.g., frown lines)
  • ATP production: Microcurrent increases cellular ATP (energy) production by up to 500%, accelerating tissue repair
  • Collagen & elastin: Stimulates fibroblast activity, promoting new collagen and elastin synthesis
  • Circulation: Improves blood and lymphatic flow, reducing puffiness and improving skin radiance
  • Product penetration: Iontophoresis effect enhances absorption of treatment serums

Pre-Treatment Protocol

  • Client Screening — Exclude clients with:
    • Cardiac pacemaker or internal defibrillator
    • Epilepsy
    • Pregnancy
    • Active cancer or undergoing chemotherapy/radiation
    • Metal implants in the treatment area
    • Thrombosis or deep vein thrombosis
    • Recent Botox or fillers (wait minimum 2 weeks)
  • Skin Preparation:
    • Thorough cleansing — remove all makeup, sunscreen, and skincare
    • Remove all metal jewelry (earrings, necklaces, facial piercings)
    • Conduct a skin sensitivity test on the inner forearm at the lowest setting
    • Apply a generous layer of conductive gel or conductive serum to the treatment area

The 7-Line Facial Lifting Protocol

This is the standard EMS facial lifting technique. Each “line” follows a specific facial muscle pathway. For each line, hold the device in position for 7 seconds, then release. Repeat 3 times per side.

  • Line 1 — Jawline: From chin to ear lobe. Targets the masseter and platysma muscles for jawline definition.
  • Line 2 — Mouth to Ear: From the corner of the mouth to the middle of the ear. Targets the buccinator and zygomatic muscles for cheek lifting.
  • Line 3 — Nasolabial Fold: From the side of the nose to the top of the ear. Targets the levator labii for nasolabial fold reduction.
  • Line 4 — Under Eye: From the inner corner of the eye to the temple. Gentle, low intensity only. Targets the orbicularis oculi.
  • Line 5 — Crow’s Feet: From the outer corner of the eye to the temple. Targets the orbicularis oculi lateral fibers.
  • Line 6 — Forehead (Brow Lift): From the inner brow to the hairline. Three parallel lines across the forehead. Targets the frontalis muscle for brow elevation.
  • Line 7 — Frown Lines: From between the eyebrows upward to the hairline. Targets the corrugator and procerus muscles to relax frown lines.

Intensity Guidelines

AreaRecommended LevelNotes
Eye areaLow (1–3)Skin is thin; always start at minimum
ForeheadLow–Medium (2–5)Avoid direct placement over temples
CheeksMedium (3–6)Can increase gradually
JawlineMedium–High (4–7)Thicker muscle mass tolerates higher intensity
NeckMedium (3–5)Avoid thyroid area

Rule of thumb: The client should feel a gentle tingling and muscle contraction — never pain. If the client cannot tolerate the sensation, reduce intensity immediately.

Treatment Duration & Frequency

  • Per session: 20–30 minutes for a full-face treatment
  • Initial course: 10–20 sessions, 2–3 times per week
  • Maintenance: 1 session per week or every 2 weeks
  • Minimum 24-hour interval between sessions to allow muscle recovery

Post-Treatment Care

  • Remove residual gel and apply hydrating serum or moisturizer
  • No specific restrictions — the treatment has zero downtime
  • Recommend daily facial massage to maintain muscle tone between sessions
  • Apply SPF sunscreen as part of regular skincare
  • Encourage adequate hydration and sleep for optimal results

Combining EMS with Other Treatments

  • EMS + RF: EMS tones muscles first, then RF tightens skin — powerful combination for overall facial rejuvenation
  • EMS + LED Therapy: Post-EMS red or near-infrared LED enhances cellular repair and extends treatment benefits
  • EMS + Serum Infusion: Use conductive serums containing hyaluronic acid, peptides, or growth factors during treatment for enhanced product penetration
